A free-standing frame allows retractable awnings to shade open areas where facade mounting is unsuitable. Depending on the system, awnings can extend on one or both sides. Optional lighting and radiant heaters increase comfort during cooler or darker hours.
Retract the awning before strong winds or storms. Compatible WAREMA wind sensors can detect increasing movement and trigger automatic retraction. A sensor supports safe operation, but it does not replace attention to local weather conditions or the operating instructions.
A retractable patio awning is primarily designed for sun protection, not as a permanent all-weather roof. Depending on the model, fabric and pitch, it may provide temporary protection from light rain. It must be retracted in strong wind, heavy rain, snow or frost. The fabrics used for WAREMA awnings are designed for outdoor use and provide effective shading. For permanent weather protection, a fixed patio cover or pergola system is the more suitable solution.
A retractable awning can reduce direct UV exposure in the shaded area. The level of protection depends on the fabric, colour, weave and angle of the sun. Awning fabrics are assessed using the ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. Follow the fabric specifications and remember that reflected and lateral sunlight can still reach the seating area. A patio awning complements, but does not replace, personal sun protection. Awnings and patio covers can both create shade, but they serve different purposes. Not every awning provides the same UV protection. Select the fabric according to the documented UPF value and the intended use of the outdoor area.
