Shaft awnings are window awnings designed for installation in existing on-site shafts or lintel boxes. The system uses the available cavity instead of a separate awning box. When retracted, the fabric and drive components are largely concealed. Suitability depends on shaft dimensions, fixing points, maintenance access, drainage and the selected guidance system.

Shaft awnings are used where exterior window shading should remain largely concealed when retracted. Depending on the selected model, guidance and awning fabric, they can reduce incident sunlight and glare and provide different levels of outward view and visual privacy. A markisolette projects the lower fabric section away from the façade, which can retain more daylight and outward view.

For shaft awnings, fabric and aluminium finishes are selected according to the desired façade appearance and interior light conditions. Fabric colour, openness and material influence daylight, outward view, glare control and visual privacy. Available choices depend on the product and country.

When retracted, the fabric shaft and much of the mechanism are housed within the on-site shaft. Guide rails, end rails or other components may remain visible, depending on the product and installation detail.

Shaft awnings are primarily designed to reduce solar radiation and glare. The level of light reduction depends on fabric colour, openness, guidance, dimensions and installation details. They should not be described as blackout systems unless the selected product and configuration are specified for that purpose.

Permitted wind loads depend on the model, guidance system, dimensions, fabric, fixing and installation location. The product-specific wind limits and operating instructions apply. More stable lateral guidance may be required for exposed locations or larger dimensions.

A shaft awning can be considered for renovation when a suitable existing shaft or lintel box is available, or when one is created as part of the building work. Available space, fixing conditions, drainage and service access must be checked before selection.

  • Maintenance access: keep inspection, adjustment and service points accessible.
  • Shaft dimensions: allow space for the fabric shaft, drive, guidance and end rail.
  • Fixing and interfaces: verify the substrate, fixing points, window sill and reveal geometry.
  • Drainage and soiling: detail the shaft so that water can drain and debris does not accumulate.
  • Wind and operation: select the model, guidance and controls for the installation location and product limits.
