How to clean a shade sail depends on the component, fabric and level of soiling. Cleaning a Shade sails is not most people's favourite late-summer activity. But with these tips and tricks, along with the proven products from WAREMA, this chore becomes a comfortable – and more importantly, rewarding – activity.

The most basic question you need to consider is when to clean your sun sail. The end of the season has proven to be the best time for this task. This saves you time and effort during spring cleaning, so that you can enjoy the first rays of springtime sun right when they arrive, without any hassle.

It also means that the sun sail will be clean and dry when you put it away for the winter. Here, sun sails with an electric drive are simply rolled up and stowed in the protective winter cover. Sun sails without a drive should be dismantled and stored in a dry location in your house or basement.

Depending on where you live, check and clean your sun sail at least once a year, depending on location, exposure and level of soiling. We recommend taking the following steps when cleaning your sun sail, whereby the amount of work required and result depends on the degree of soiling.

The surfaces of your sun sail need to be cleaned at least once a year. It's best to use the WAREMA cleaning glove together with the WAREMA cleaning agent concentrate for sun shading products. For stainless steel poles, the non-woven cloth used in combination with standard cleaning and care products is suitable for stainless steel (V2A). When cleaning, it must be ensured that the non-woven is moved in the same direction as the grinding on the stainless steel pole finish. The non-woven is designed to remove rust bloom, other residue and small scratches from the surface. It creates a finish on the surface that matches the one created at the factory (same grain size). The WAREMA cleaning agent for sun shading products can be used for metal and plastic surfaces and is certified by the GRM (Gütegemeinschaft Reinigung von Fassaden e.V.).

Cleaning will vary with the fabric quality and the type of coating (e.g. special coating such as aluminium vapour coating). Test the procedure in a less visible area first. If you have any questions, please contact your WAREMA specialised retailer for further information. We recommend using the following equipment: whisk broom/broom (soft bristles), vacuum cleaner (optional), bucket, low-calcium water (recommended), WAREMA cleaning agent concentrate for sun shading products, WAREMA cleaning glove, cotton cloth and, additionally for awning fabric, a rubber eraser (not discolouring), adhesive tape and mild detergent.

The weather station must be cleaned every three months to ensure the measured values are accurate and ensure operating safety and reliability. Remove dirt from the transparent cover of the weather station. Use a damp cleaning glove for this purpose. Then blow out the opening for the wind measurement. Make sure to not introduce any pointed objects in the process. Make sure to inspect the weather station of your sun sail before cleaning. If you notice anything when visually inspecting the product, stop using it and have the damage repaired by a qualified specialist partner.

There are a few rules to keep in mind when you clean your sun sail. Adhering to these rules is the best way to preserve your sun sail's appearance, functionality and value. The absolute don'ts include:

  • Washing machines
  • High pressure washers
  • Caustic and aggressive household detergents

These can damage your sun sail and/or weaken its impregnation. For the same reasons, you should refrain from using any stiff brushes or abrasive sponges. Instead of these, WAREMA offers helpful products, which was specially developed for external shading products and their materials.
