Solar blinds from WAREMA operate external venetian blinds without a mains connection at the window. The same solar-drive principle is also available for selected roller shutters and window awnings, making these systems particularly suitable for retrofitting.
Solar blinds can reduce the electrical work required when retrofitting external sun shading because no mains cable has to be routed to the drive at the window.
WAREMA solar-drive solutions do not require additional mains line routing at the window. The off-grid operation of roller shutters , external venetian blinds and window awnings with a solar drive uses energy generated by the solar panel and stored in a battery. This allows the shading system to operate independently of the mains supply.
The Becker SolarKit powers selected roller shutters and window awnings using solar energy stored in a battery, without a mains connection at the window.
The EWFS SolarKit provides a solar drive for selected external venetian blinds and enables radio-controlled operation without a mains connection at the window.

Solar blinds and other solar-powered shading systems depend on sufficient sunlight at the solar panel. This is especially important for renovation projects where the system is intended to operate without a mains connection. The following guidance explains how orientation and shading affect the installation location.
The incidence range and compass direction have a major impact on charging efficiency. The sun incidence angle must not fall below 60°. To ensure this, make sure to consider the following parameters:
South, west, south-west, south-east and east facing (ideal state)
- As a rule of thumb, the sky should always be directly visible from the viewpoint of the solar panel.
- The panel can also be installed externally on a facade if necessary in the case of roller shutters.
North, north-west and north-east facing
- The solar panel must have an unhindered view of the sky in all directions – without any obstacles such as shadows cast by trees or parts of the facade.
We recommend externally mounting the solar panel in the presence of roller shutters in the following scenarios. The solar panel can be installed either above or below a window, or on projecting edges. Any extension cables required will be provided as accessories.
Carefully selecting and optimising the installation location allows the SolarKit to function all year round. The solar drive is optionally available with a charging function by means of a power supply unit.
The following installation locations can limit SolarKit charging performance because the solar panel may receive insufficient sunlight:
Note: When attaching the SolarKit to permanent glazing, external access for the power connection may not be possible under certain circumstances depending on the on-site situation.
Solar blinds and other solar-powered shading systems are particularly useful where additional mains wiring at the window is difficult or undesirable. Depending on the selected product, the system offers the following practical advantages:
- Solar powered: The solar energy generated by the panel is stored in a battery.
- No mains power supply needed: The sun shading system has its own energy supply, which makes it independent of the power grid. The drive therefore does not draw operating power from the building mains supply.
- Easy to install: No electrical connection work, wall openings or complex line routing is needed to retrofit the sun shading product.

Solar blinds can be considered for both renovation and selected new-build applications. The planning guides explain how to choose suitable external shading, coordinate installation and select compatible controls.
Modern sun shading systems meet a variety of requirements. They regulate daylight, support privacy, form part of the facade design and can be combined with intelligent control systems. But what kind of sun shading is best suited for your requirements? WAREMA guides you through the selection process, providing the information and inspiration you need to make the right decision for new buildings.
For renovation projects, compare the available shading and control options before deciding what to retrofit. Depending on the building and requirements, this can include external venetian blinds , roller shutters , awnings , fly screens or smart home automation for external blinds . The modernisation guide provides further information on planning external shading with or without window replacement.
