Kid's rooms are playrooms. Children are curious and love climbing, playing and romping around. In a home environment, fantasy knows no limits – but the home is also the place where most accidents with small children occur.
We recommend to parents that they examine their child's environment from the child's point of view and perform "safety checks" on a regular basis. Windows, too, present risks to children that often go unrecognised at first glance.
The risks that internal sun shading systems pose to children lie in their method of operation. Cord and chain operating methods require special attention. In general, they must be kept out of reach of children and must be secured with ball chain brackets and cord winders as stipulated in DIN EN 13120. At WAREMA, these accessories are already included in the scope of delivery and can be installed in just a few steps. Nevertheless, these operating mechanisms should only be used in areas in which children are not left without supervision or if it can be ensured that they cannot climb onto furniture or chairs to reach and loosen the operating elements.
Still safer are alternative operating methods such as crank operation for venetian blinds and roller blinds, handles for pleated blinds and rods for vertical louvre blinds. Particularly recommendable for areas in which children have unsupervised access are motors and remote controls – important features to consider when planning and equipping kindergartens, daycare centres and elementary schools.
When planning internal sun shading systems for a home or for public institutions like kindergartens, daycare centres and elementary schools, specific child-safe operating methods recommended by WAREMA should be taken into account.
